Welcome to the Richard Hale Association

The Richard Hale Association is an international association of former pupils and staff of Richard Hale (formerly Hertford Grammar) School, Hertford, Herts, England.

The Association's aims are to maintain a bond between former members of the School and between them and the School. It does this in a variety of ways, from arranging formal and informal gatherings of Old Boys (and in many cases their families), at the clubhouse and in Hertford, in different parts of the UK and in different parts of the world, to producing an annual magazine for Association members, giving news of Old Boys and the School, and of events past and present, and to come.

Calling all Golfers

A Personal Message from David Boatman

I have been elected Captain of the Old Hertfordians Golfing Society for 2012 and have decided that part of my mission will be to increase our membership. Therefore, I am sending a personal invitation to Old Hertfordians (all former pupils of Hertford Grammar and Richard Hale School) who play golf, but are not currently members of our society to join us.

The society was formed when the Old Hertfordian’s Rugby Club (now Hertford Rugby Club) was in its prime and several players were looking for a sport where they would continue to enjoy the company of fellow old boys in a less physically demanding arena.

I joined the society on my retirement five years ago and have had great fund playing in the competitions at East Herts Golf Club and visiting other courses with my old school friends.

We have a good fixture list, which includes competitions on our popular home course (East Herts), where you can play as a member’s guest. We also have a day out (Saffron Walden this year) and a 3-day golfing break in the autumn.

If this is of interest, please contact me, or the Hon. Sec: John Russ at 5 Millfield, Wadesmill, Ware, Hertfordshire, SG12 0TU

Or email johngruss @ hotmail.com so that we can send you the first OHGS newsletter and fixture list for 2012.

In its curriculum vitae of Robert Mossom, who became Bishop of Londonderry in 1666, the Dictionary of National Biography fails to disclose the whereabouts of the Right Reverend gentleman between 1636 and 1642. It so happens that the name of the Usher at Hertford Grammar School during these years was Robert Mossom. “I do fully intend, God willing, to apply myself to a school and not to enter into the ministry” wrote an applicant for the post of Usher in November, 1641. Shortly afterwards he was ordained priest and instituted as Vicar of Newnham (near Baldock)
